About Therapy
People are often scared of the healing process.
They are daunted because they’ll have to feel feelings that they don’t want to feel, and revisit memories that cause them pain.
Here’s what’s nice about how I work: Because my process is intuitive and embodied, your body, not your mind, leads the way.
We don’t bulldoze over feelings here.
You may be used to “bulldozing over” feelings to get the information out. Instead of the bulldozer approach, we will be checking in with your body to sense how it’s feeling.
If you feel overwhelmed, we pause. If you feel resistance, we meet it gently and get to know it. Anything we “work on” won’t be decided by what you THINK you should be doing, but by what your wise nervous system offers up as the next piece it is ready to address.
In other words: your nervous system, intuition, and body lead the way – not your brain. Because of this, you should leave sessions feeling resourced, rather than rattled.
My approach is the polar opposite of most therapy.
The good news is that it WORKS. During the process, you might also feel grief, anger, or fear, but you’ll sense centeredness and calm alongside them.
Encouraging people to “cut off” at the neck and stay cerebral was part of Enlightenment thinking, back in Europe several centuries ago. It was actually spread to encourage people to conceptualize their bodies as machines and to submit to factory work.
Before that, when we were in constant contact with the Earth, we were far more intuitively connected to ourselves and our greater ecosystem. This type of work we’ll be doing is actually pretty revolutionary, and more aligned with indigenous than modern methods.
What is it like to work with me?
I am not your typical therapist or nutritionist.
Therapists are supposed to be warm and empathic. I am warm, yes (I have been compared to the sun several times, which is interesting, because I am sooo comfortable hanging out in the shadow). I hold an empathic space, yes. That’s kinda the minimum requirement for a healer! I am also direct and very intuitive.
Expect to explore how supplements and nutrition can reduce or eliminate your anxiety, insomnia, and cravings. Also expect a sprinkle or more of astrology, the Enneagram, herbalism, and/or indigenous spiritual /Earth-based practices.
And hey, if those aren’t your thang, we’ll do the standard: in which you gain an embodied understanding of your internal experience and learn effective ways of navigating your emotions so that you’re the conductor of your own orchestra.

About Stephanie Small, LCSW

Here are the official bits.
I am an LCSW and a functional nutritionist. I received my BA from Yale University, my MSW from Smith College for Social Work, and certifications in holistic nutrition and mental health nutrition from Bauman College and the Academy for Addiction Solutions (among other places).
In Las Lobas del Corazón, I founded and directed a holistic psychotherapy and health clinic, which I closed before the birth of my son.
Currently, I maintain an online private practice, write, teach, and facilitate groups. I am honored to facilitate a psilocybin ceremony and to serve on the board at The Church of Psychedelics.
And I believe that, as a collective, we are suffering because we are not living the way we were intended to live.
In my spare time…
Ha Ha, I have no spare time, because I have a baby. But I have Jupiter in Gemini (IYKYK), and I’m a little neurospicy, so I have an abundance of passions and interests.
If and when I have a free moment, you can find me communing with the datura, rosemary, and cherry tree in my garden; meditating; singing and singing and singing; moving my body in all kinds of ways (Muay Thai and yoga are faves); whipping up scrumptious paleo desserts, engaging in activism; and studying conjure and Jewish mysticism – among other things.
